PADIs future is digital. That’s how the world’s largest training organization for divers sees things at any rate.

"Divers Paradise Becomes Digital"

Time and again, it makes the headlines as it has done so in the past: digital underwater photography, that is. As of January 2006, it will no longer only be found in the media, but also in PADIs training program. PADI Digital Underwater Photographer is the name of the new specialty. Pictures as and when you like, ultra simple image storage, direct on-screen image presentation or prints, and all without having to suffer any major losses of quality compared with analog photography – photo enthusiasts will be able to learn all this from 2006 onwards. Including picture editing, it should be noted.

The PADI digital underwater photographer specialty

The new specialty is based on the concept of a two-part course. In this way, successful results can be achieved very quickly. Working with the camera also guarantees an additional feeling of achievement, since the results that this experience of success is built on can be seen immediately. The course is made up of the following steps:

Level 1:

  • Point-and-shoot cameras and their practicabilities
  • White balancing
  • Color filters
  • Taking photographs without external flash

Level 2:

  • Using histograms
  • File formats
  • Image resolution
  • Picture composition
  • Organization and archiving

Practical work on and with the camera accompanies the training program. And this, most importantly, underwater, of course. Prerequisite for taking part in level 1 of the PADI Digital Underwater Photographer Specialty is the successful completion of a PADI Open Water Diver course (or higher) and, for level 2, the successful completion of level 1. The minimum age for taking part in the course is 10. Each of the two levels takes four hours.

Snorklers can also take part in the course and enroll for both levels 1 and 2. Upon completion, they will however receive a so-called non-diver certificate.

Orpheus Dive Singapore : an all-in-one provider

When it comes to the PADI Digital Underwater Photographer Specialty, Orpheus Dive Singapore acts as an all-in-one provider for its customers. In concrete terms, this means that participants have access to both the training material and the camera including underwater housing at the Orpheus Dive Singapore where the course is being held. This in turn means that participants can complete the specialty without having to use their own equipment. This can be “hired” and – if participants wish to do so – purchased from Orpheus Dive Singapore upon completion of the course.

If you choose to use your own camera, it can also be done.

Special Additional Training

Scuba Divers can further learn post production of their underwater images through a modified session of Photoshop Image Correction course for free. This course covers techniques of using photoshop color correction tools and Orpheus Dive unique Actions Palette.
