Have you ever wanted to witness the diversity of growth in people, and their joy in learning? Ever wondered how it would be to encourage lifelong learning for both others and yourself? And to experience the challenge of planning and doing interesting, exciting activities for people?

If you like people, have a passion for scuba diving and want an extraordinary life – become a PADI Instructor. Teaching scuba diving allows you to share your love of the aquatic world with others while doing what you enjoy – being in, around and under water.

quoteLooking back 20 years ago as I first set foot as a PADI Divemaster, the reasons I tell people why I chose to become a dive professional back then and now are different. I used to think that becoming a PADI Divemaster was all about scuba diving, sharing the passion and having fun.

Fast forward to this day, I realized that becoming a dive professional was an important milestone in my life. With this special set of skills, I was able to transform the lives of many. I have taken people who had so much fear in water and made them into a competent diver. I have given hope and careers to many people.

Diving has changed the lives of people, giving them more confidence, teaching them to appreciate Mother Nature and generally, becoming better people.

This is My Life, My PADI.

Choosing A Team For Your Instructor Training

PADI Gopro - Scuba Instructor (IDC) Course | scuba instructor course

Never Choose Your Instructor Course Based on Fees

Being a good scuba diving instructor starts from the day you begin your professional training. A huge factor to the success of you being an excellent scuba diving instructor is the team of Staff members and Course Directors who are conducting the course for you, this is what we call the ABCDE of our IDC Program.

Our staff members onboard has been assisting Platinum Course Directors since the early 2000. Always ask about the credentials of your Course Directors how long have they been a diver as this is a rough estimate on how experience they have.

 ADAPTIVE TEACHING TECHNIQUES

Adaptation is a feature that is common in a population because it provides some improved functions in life. The PADI IDC program has a fixed syllabus but depending on the audience of the group, the way the information is delivered is never the same.

Place down the butcher knife and seek peace and enlightenment – Buddhism Idiom

The above statement would make sense to a scholar but it will not make full sense to a person who earns a decent income as a butcher. One statement can be perceived in many different ways, let alone a system that teaches diving. The strength in our team of staff members is their unique ability to translate a simple system into many different forms for people from all walks of lives and enabling them to understand better.

It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change – Charles Darwin.

BUSINESS OF DIVING

Many dive businesses have been lead into a disillusion, judging their business solely by the number of divers per week. Similar to website rankings that are judged by number of clicks, none of this translate directly to the level of success of a business. The sustainability of adive business should be evaluated on a quarterly basis (if not, annually) to see if adaptive changes need to be made.

Orpheus Dive has designed a unique way of judging businesses and their success based on our own experience.

  1. Their ability to practise retention of clients.
  2. Continuing education (both diving and diving related training) for their staff
  3. An acceptable range of salaries payable to their staff that are of similar range compared to jobs in the market
  4. Reserved funds
  5. A healthy cash flow in their P&L

One attribute to our success in the previous years is our investments in the training of our staff. All our staff have gone through many diving related training such as international workshops to bring our level of service standards on par with what international companies are offering. On top of that, our ground staff are also trained in a unique system designed by our Founders that allows them to interact with divers on a personal level. The fundamental skeleton of this system is based on the original PADI Positive Sales Approach, combined with a unique system that allows us to tap into and listen to the needs of divers on a very personal level.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT

In Singapore’s context, there are few categories of instructors that are currently available and depending on what you are seeking for, there is always something for you.

  1. Full-time Instructors working in local dive centres as their career choice.
  2. Volunteering instructors that teaches occasionally
  3. “Full-time” volunteering instructors who hold full-time jobs as professionals in other fields but have chose to commit their free time to teach scuba diving
  4. Transitional Instructors who are in the transition of jobs and are working as instructors.

Categories 1 and 3 are the most common instructors in Singapore. Depending on what you are seeking, to teach out of passion or to have a new career as a scuba diving instructor, we will guide you along the way to achieve your dreams.

DEVELOPMENT – LIFE AFTER PADI IE

Our responsibilities toward you do not end after your initial Instructor Examinations (IE). Divers need to constantly upgrade their skills to become more proficient and so do instructors. Becoming a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor is just the first step to many other opportunities such as teaching PADI IDC, PADI TecRec courses or simply learning to teach more PADI Specialties.

And for those who are good with computers, you can even learn how to use social media and other form of digital media to further enhance your teaching experience and interaction with your student divers. And for those who are keen to follow the footsteps of Orpheus Dive instructors who are inspired to learn more as a dive professional, there are other technical courses such as equipment repair courses that you can pick up as well.

ENVIRONMENT – GIVING BACK

Giving back to the environment is a huge part of being a prudent scuba instructor. The ocean is our playground and classroom. Taking care of the ocean is our sole responsibility. As a scuba instructor, training competent student divers who shares the passion and has great buoyancy is a very important part of our career.

“Take care of the ocean and the ocean will take care of you. Respect Mother Nature as the ocean is the answer to many of the problems humans have created.” – Founder, Lester Kwok.

And besides from giving back to the environment, very often, Orpheus Dive will also assist in animal welfare, specifically dogs and cats. Helping homeless and injured animals and giving them a second chance in life.

quoteAfter assisting some of the top Platinum PADI Course Directors right here in Singapore and Malaysia, we do realize that many PADI newly certified instructors are often guided by the ill practices of the industry. Whilst it is almost impossible to guide each of them along the way, especially in the areas of business of diving, there are some fundamental business concepts that will apply to you as a PADI Instructor regardless of where you are in the world.

While people say that the hardest part of being an Instructor is during the examinations, we feel that the hardest part of being an Instructor is Life after your IE and trying to be an outstanding instructor.
This is My Life, My PADI.

Course Prerequisites

A PADI Divemaster who has been a certified diver for six months may enroll in the PADI Instructor Development Course. You also need:

  • At least 60 logged dives and 100 dives to attend an IE.
  • Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care (CPR and First Aid) training within the past 24 months.
  • medical statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months

You also need to be an Emergency First Response Instructor, but you can earn this rating during your instructor training.

Dive professionals who hold an instructor rating with another diver training organization may be eligible to enroll directly in the OWSI program. This recognizes prior instructor training and provides a path to become a PADI Instructor.

EMBARK ON A TEACHING JOURNEY

If you like people, have a passion for scuba diving and want an extraordinary life – become a PADI Instructor. Teaching scuba diving allows you to share your love of the aquatic world with others while doing what you enjoy – being in, around and under water. PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors and PADI Assistant Instructors are the most sought-after dive professionals around the world because they’ve completed the program that sets the standard for training dive professionals. You earn a PADI Instructor rating through hard work and commitment, but you’re rewarded with a job that lets you share incredible underwater adventures with others – transforming their lives for the better and enriching yours.

Are you ready to join the ranks of the dedicated professionals who teach the world’s most progressive and popular scuba diver education programs? Then Go PROSM with an Instructor Development Course.

The Instructor Development Course (IDC) is made up of two parts – the Assistant Instructor (AI) course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. Most dive professionals complete the entire IDC and go on to attend an Instructor Examination (IE), which is the final step to earn a PADI Instructor certification.

Successfully completing just the AI course results in a PADI Assistant Instructor qualification. When an AI is ready to progress, attending an OWSI program allows entry into an IE to earn a full PADI Instructor rating.

Dive professionals who hold an instructor rating with another diver training organization may be eligible to enroll directly in the OWSI program. This recognizes prior instructor training and provides a path to become a PADI Instructor.

GOALS AND PURPOSE

Over a minimum of five days, but usually more like seven, the IDC teaches you to conduct all PADI core courses. You’ll be able to organize and present information, conduct skill development sessions and control open water dives. Basically, you become a better public speaker and get really good at demonstrating skills while watching out for student diver safety. Key topics include:

  • PADI Standards and Procedures for courses you can teach with in water workshops
  • Learning, Instruction and the PADI System
  • Risk Management and Diver Safety
  • The Business of Diving and your role as an instructor
  • Marketing Diving and Sales Counseling

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

All equipment must be present throughout the entire course. Diving candidates wishing to rent the entire set of equipment can do so at a rental fees of SGD$ 500 for the entire duration of course. Please note, the entire set of equipment is rented as a whole set regardless of owning individual pieces.

WHAT IS AN IE

An Instructor Examination (IE) is a two-day evaluative program that tests an instructor candidate’s teaching ability, dive theory knowledge, skill level, understanding of the PADI System, and attitude and professionalism. PADI IEs are standardized and conducted by specially trained PADI Instructor Examiners. The IE location, testing environment and examination sessions are organized to be as objective as possible to fairly and consistently evaluate a candidate’s abilities. Only those who meet the IE performance requirements earn the respected PADI Instructor certification. There is a fee for attending an IE.
