Mention Lembeh scuba diving to any serious underwater photographer and their eyes come over all misty and distant. No place on the planet gives you the chance to see more shy critters such as the mimic octopus, flamboyant cuttlefish, harlequin shrimps, skeleton shrimps and innumerable nudibranchs.

The fish also include the usual tropical reef suspects but also the more bizarre: Ambon scorpionfish, snake eels, stonefish, sea robins, stargazers, devil fish and even the weedy scorpionfish. There are also beautiful seahorses including pygmies, pegasus, mandarinfish, ghost pipefish and the endemic Banggai cardinalfish. Lembeh Strait dive resorts have a higher than average rate of return customers as enthused first-timers return year upon year, never tiring of the wonders of this undersea paradise.

There are many diving places which claim to be the best and very few get close but it is difficult to imagine a better place in the world for critter hunting, or muck diving. No more than a few breaths go by between one bizarre and exhilarating sight and the next. If you’ve tired of night dives, then try one in Lembeh – they are simply fantastic. We don’t know of a better place for after dark encounters with extraordinary marine life.

Including the wrecks and more traditional reefs, there are over 30 sites to choose from, all within 6 or 7 kilometres of the dive resorts, or just a few minutes boat ride across these calm, lake-like waters. It’s easy to understand why scuba diving in the Lembeh Strait has a reputation that’s hard to beat among discerning divers that want easy and convenient access to exceptional diving opportunities with bizarre marine life that you simply can not see in other destinations.

For now, visitors from most countries are granted a 60-day (non-extendable) ‘short-stay’ visa at any of the ‘designated’ air and sea gateways. Some major gateways in Sulawesi include Manado, Makassar and Bitung port. It is important that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into Indonesia. In the past, the nationals of 48 nations were given a 60-day stay (visa free) upon arrival at an Indonesian international gateway. Under the new rules effective February 1, 2004: Only 11 countries and territories will be eligible for a “Visa Free” facility, they are: Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, Philippines, Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, Chile, Morocco, Peru and Vietnam. Beginning February 1, 2004, the nationals of 21 countries will be able to obtain a “Visa on Arrival” processed at the gate of entry following the payment of an official fee. The citizens of the 21 countries and territories eligible to purchase visas on arrival are: the United States, Australia, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Denmark, United Arab Emirates, Finland, Hungary, United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Germany, Canada, South Korea, Norway, France, Poland, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Taiwan. The Visa on Arrival fee for citizens of eligible countries is US$ 25 for a 30 day visa and US$ 10 for a 3 day visa.

SINGAPORE TO MANADO

Manado is in the far north east of the island and is the main city of the North Sulawesi. It is the point of entry for most visitors, particularly those who are resort diving in Bunaken and the Lembeh Strait. The backdrop to this small city is row upon row of rising green peaks and it sits facing the volcanic island of Manado Tua, Bunaken and Siladen islands.

To dive at Bunaken you will stay in a resort around Manado (land transfer of up to 30 minutes) or on the island of Bunaken itself, a 45 minute boat ride from the city. The Lembeh resorts located on the mainland are around 1 hour by road from Manado. Those based on Lembeh island itself involve an additional short boat transfer of between 5 and 15 minutes.

MANADO DIVING SEASON

You can enjoy Bunaken Island diving all year round but overall the best season for dive conditions are from March to October. November to late-February sometimes sees winds and rains so surface conditions can be occasionally rough with 1 or 2 metre swells at that time. Litter washed up from the mainland can also be a problem in rainy season too.

Water temperature (27-30°C) and visibility (20-35m) are pretty constant all year round. The rainy season of November to late February is less pronounced than at some other places in the region although showers are not unusual during this time. Visibility is reduced when it rains, more so around Manado bay sites than those at Bunaken.

Many creatures here are year round, such as the amazing array of giant clams and nudibranchs. Resident dugongs as well as barracuda and tuna appear throughout the year. June is a good months for sharks, July for dolphins and whales. Sperm whales migrate through the region to calf in the Sangihe region in March and July/August. This period also happens to be the time when homosapiens are present in the area in large numbers.
