Perhentian Island

Important Notice

We no longer offer this destination due to the public feedback.

The islands of Pulau Perhentian Besar and Pulau Perhentian Kecil are one of Malaysia’s top tourist attractions. They are surrounded by turquoise blue sea and lined with palm trees and white sand beaches providing an idyllic tropical island getaway.

The Perhentian Islands consist of the two main inhabited islands and a few smaller uninhabited islands, Perhentian Besar being the larger of the two. Both islands are very popular with tourists are still not yet very built up. Perhentian Besar is the more expensive of the two islands with a few more upmarket accommodation and resorts, while Perhentian Kecil is cheaper and caters more for backpackers.

The climate in this area is tropical so although most of the year is it lovely hot beach weather it does have a monsoon season. This is from the end of October to the end of March and during this season all accommodation and tourist businesses shut down and most people leave the islands. So the dive season runs from Early April to Late October.

Water temperature during this time varies from 27C-32C with the coldest water temperature being during the middle of the monsoon and raising back up to 30C plus for the start of the dive season. This means that it is comfortable to dive in board shorts and a rash vest, or if you are prone to the cold then a 3mm shorty wetsuit. This beautifully warm water lasts all the way through the season and only starts dropping back down at the start of the monsoon at the end October/beginning of November.

HOW TO GET TO PERHENTIAN FROM SINGAPORE

No direct flights

Pulau Perhentian is small, and it does not have an airport. Thus, there is no direct flight to Perhentian from Singapore. If you want to take a plane, you can travel with AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bharu Airport. From the airport in Kota Bharu, you can take a taxi to the Kuala Besut jetty for RM78 per car, one-way.

By train

A more convenient option is to take the train from Malaysia’s Johor Bahru, immediately behind the Causeway border crossing near Woodlands. The train ride is longer and more expensive than the bus ride, but more comfortable. You can sboard a train to Tanah Merah train station in Malaysia (not to be confused with the MRT station of the same name in Singapore). The train ride is about 12 hours, and the night train offers pretty comfortable sleeper berths. From Tanah Merah station, you can catch a taxi for about RM45 to the Kuala Besut jetty. The taxi ride is less about an hour.

By bus

Alternatively, you can take a 10-hour bus ride with Transnasional. Currently the direct Singapore to Kota Bahru service has been suspended and you can take a bus from Johor Bahru’s Larkin Bus Terminal in Malaysia. The bus to Kota Bharu will drop you off at Jerteh, from where you can catch a taxi to the Kuala Besut Jetty. Buses depart at 9am and 9pm, and cost $38.55. Taxi drivers will wait for you when you alight in Jerteh.

PERHENTIAN DIVING SEASON

The Perhentians islands are almost completely closed from November to March with irregular boats, and most of the hotels, resorts and diving centres closed. In the other months the Islands are fully booming with nice tropical weather.

  • Dry season from April to October, average temperature of 27°C.
  • Rainy season from November to March, average temperature of 29°C.
  • Peak touristic season runs from July to August

The diving season is also from April to October. The best visibility is generally around summer time. The water temperature is between 27°C to 32°C year round.
