In the Andaman Sea, to the north of the Thai border lie the largely undisturbed seas of Myanmar. Since the area was only opened up to tourism in 1997, divers who choose to liveaboard dive in Burma feel a great sense of privilege at witnessing the awesome sights above and below the surface of the Mergui region (also known as Myeik) that has remained untouched for years. Many divers board Myanmar liveaboards to explore the Similan Islands, but if you venture further north into Burma’s Mergui Archipelago, what will you find?
Imagine the opportunity to dive and cruise far from the average tourist’s beaten track and picture yourself onboard a ship cutting through the silence on flat-calm crystal seas, past uninhabited, secluded islands without another vessel in site. Burma scuba diving safaris offer rewards beyond its excellent dive spots.
Fish sightings you can expect in the archipelago include armies of barracuda, dogtooth tuna, batfish, unicornfish and trevallies. Bigger pelagics such as manta rays and the awesome whale shark, and grey reef and white tip sharks may put in an appearance. Many of the Mergui dive sites are renowned for their big fish action and you hear people talk of sites such as Shark Cave and Black Rock in hushed, reverential tones.
However it is the smaller stuff which is beginning to win recognition and make divers realise there is more to diving Burma than merely the big fish and seclusion. Lobsters, crabs and shrimps of seemingly every shape, colour and size scuttle over the sea floor whilst cuttlefish, ghost pipefish, frogfish and octopus all enjoy the relatively boat-free Mergui waters.
Motor Yacht Mega Adventurer is a high-speed catamaran with her hull, superstructure and deck entirely of aluminium, built to Lloyds Register classification society rules. Formerly the famous M.Y. HOW TO GET TO Mergui FROM SINGAPORE
There are numerous direct flights from Singapore’s Changi International Airport (SIN) to Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) daily and both international airlines and budget airlines operate this route. This makes Bali, Indonesia very accessible from Singapore. The average flight time is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes which is ideal for divers looking for short trips and do not like the long bus rides to traditional nearby locations like Tioman. The airline that we suggest is Royal Dutch Airline – KLM.
Singapore (SIN) – Denpasar (DPS) : 1735hrs – 2015hrs (Daily)
Denpasar (DPS) – Singapore (SIN) : 2130hrs – 2359hrs (Daily)
BALI DIVING SEASON
The dive season is year round in Bali although conditions do vary from time to time and location to location. December to March is rainy season (although most days it doesn’t rain) and there are fewer scuba divers around. However, visibility is sometimes a little reduced around the north and west of the island.
The best conditions to dive in Tulamben can be found between early April to July, October and November. It is dry season during these months and visibility can reach a spectacular 40 metres at this time of year.
The diving around Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida is good all year round and visibility is generally 20-30 metres. Water temperatures are usually 25-26°C except during mola mola season when it can drop to the low 20’s. Sunfish, sharks and other large pelagics are best spotted between June and September which is also the time when seas might be both disturbed and enriched by the monsoon winds. The best time to see mantas is from April until June, although they are present all year round.
