WHERE IT ALL STARTED
TELOK AYER STREET
Orpheus Dive’s founder was an active Divemaster with Abyss Scuba International. While working full-time as a Media Designer with Mediacorp, he was also actively and helping Abyss Scuba International. He learned about the bad habits of the diving industry and what a dive shop should not be practicing and very often, he imagined what could be done for things to be better. Soon enough, he toyed about the idea of whether he should carry on his work in an corporate environment or open a dive ship and pursue his interest.
Looking for a suitable location for a dive shop was not an easy task. Most dive shops are scattered all over Singapore. Considerations such as accessibility, public transport, parking, food, washing area in shop were some of the few factors.
Working with a shoestring budget, we decided to park ourselves at 184A Telok Ayer Street. With 2 partitioned room and a hall, this was kinda ideal for what we need to get the shop started.
THE ORIGINAL TEAM
The original team of instructors consist of three main instructors. The team slowly grew with more and more PADI Divemasters along the way.
Instructor Examinations in Singapore
In 2005, Singapore saw their first IE with a total of 8 candidates. It was a combine IE with 7 candidates from Orpheus Dive. PADI Course Director Azman Sulaiman with PADI MI Lester conducted the entire course for all candidates.
EXPANSION - THE SCUBA SHOP
2008 was the big year for Orpheus Dive. We left our original place in Telok Ayer Street and expanded to 363 Beach Road, and set up The Scuba Shop, the retail arm of Orpheus Dive. We officially became the first Scubapro Master Dealer in Singapore as well.
